About Mr. Pleat

Jonathon (Jon) Pleat is a highly regarded plastic and reconstructive surgeon based in Bristol. His surgical interests include scar management, burn care, skin cancer, and complex reconstructive techniques. After earning a First-class degree at Oxford in 1995, he completed advanced surgical training across six UK specialist centres, and enriched his experience with fellowships in Australia, the US, Taiwan, and South Africa.

His DPhil research probed mechanisms and therapies for scarring, earning him awards such as the ETRS Young Investigator Medal and the Duke of Kent Research Fellowship. He has served as Director of Research for the burns and wound-healing charity Restore, collaborating with leading academic institutions and international research groups.

Driven by a holistic, evidence-based approach, Jon leads the Scar Team at Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital, employing modern interventions like intralesional cryotherapy and laser-assisted drug delivery. He has a special interest in treating keloid scars of the torso, limbs, and ears.

In his role as an NHS skin cancer consultant, Jon is an integral member of the North Bristol skin cancer multidisciplinary team and chairs the Skin Cancer Research Fund — one of the UK’s oldest charities focused solely on skin cancer. Privately, he offers mole assessments and treats both malignant and benign skin lesions, performing around 300 skin procedures each year.

Jonathon was also a founding editor of GPNotebook (for primary care professionals), and has held leadership roles within the Bristol Burns Service and national burn care standards committees. He serves as a scientific advisor to both the Centre for Appearance Research (University of the West of England) and the Vocational Training Charitable Trust Fund, specialising in disfigurement, appearance, and body image. His research partnerships span Perth, Antwerp, and Beijing.
